A long hot summer has turned deadly in the streets of Chicago, with July’s murder rate jumping almost 140% over this time last year. According to CNN, the deadly month culminated in the shooting of a 9-year-old boy near the North Side, whose death capped the month off with 212 children killed in the city.

Almost every one of these deaths can be attributed in some way to gun violence, especially firearms obtained illegally, and police have reported that seizures of illegal firearms are up in 2020 as well.

This year has been a difficult one for many, whether due to COVID-19 or its aftermath. This increase in violence across Chicago can be attributed to a few factors but much of it has to do with the economic strife and cross-country protests against racial violence. With so many people out of work and participating in protests, things are bound to turn violent when too many people hit their boiling points. This July in Chicago is one of the most violent in years, and police are worried that this trend will only continue.

Violent Crime in Chicago

No one will deny that Chicago can be rough, especially if you are not from an affluent or influential family living in a gorgeous suburb. When survival becomes impossible, some people are forced to turn towards violent crime to ensure that they are able to put food on the table for their families. In many situations, deaths due to this type of crime are accidental, but that doesn’t make it any less tragic for the families who lose their loved ones.

In Illinois, the criminal justice system does not look kindly onto those accused of gun crimes and homicide, and even if you are innocent you cannot be sure that the jury will not vote to convict you of a serious charge. While no one should be denied due process, there is a certain pressure by police and other officials to find a scapegoat for violent crimes and this is not acceptable.

Choosing a talented criminal defense attorney will be the best way to protect yourself in this situation. Not everyone has access to the best and brightest minds that Chicago has to offer, but sometimes there is really no price that can be put upon freedom to work, live, and do as you will for the rest of your life.
