Six people were taken to hospitals, including three who suffered critical injuries, following a chain-reaction crash early Sunday morning in Chicago’s Roscoe Village neighborhood, according to police. The collision occurred shortly after 3:20 a.m. near the intersection of West Addison Street and North Western Avenue on the city’s North Side.

Authorities said a black Honda sedan traveling eastbound on Addison Street allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a white Toyota SUV that was heading southbound on Western Avenue. The force of the impact caused the SUV to overturn and strike a nearby light pole. Police said the Honda then spun out of control and collided with a black Toyota sedan that was stopped facing northbound on Western Avenue.

The Honda’s 21-year-old driver and two passengers — a woman and a 22-year-old man — were transported to area hospitals in critical condition with head injuries. The driver of the Toyota SUV, a 57-year-old man, and his 37-year-old passenger were hospitalized in fair condition after suffering head lacerations. A 41-year-old woman driving the Toyota sedan was also taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Police said citations are pending as the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
