Accident News | Deerfield, Illinois
A small plane from southern Wisconsin crashed in a suburban Chicago neighborhood late Wednesday night, killing the pilot and prompting an investigation by federal authorities. The aircraft went down shortly before 9:45 p.m. behind a row of townhomes in Deerfield, Illinois, according to local officials.
Authorities said the plane lost communication with the control tower at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling moments before the crash. Air traffic control recordings indicated the pilot was warned about low altitude and was instructed to climb as the aircraft descended to only a few hundred feet above the ground.
The plane struck the roof area of a townhome and hit two gas meters before ultimately crashing behind the residential buildings. Despite the impact occurring in a populated area, officials said there were no injuries reported among residents and no major structural damage to nearby homes.
Neighbors who rushed outside after the crash reported seeing significant damage to the cockpit area, making it impossible to assist the pilot. Emergency crews later confirmed that the pilot, who was the only person aboard the aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said dense fog in the region Wednesday night may have contributed to the incident, though investigators are still working to determine the exact cause. There is also uncertainty surrounding where the plane departed from. Some reports suggested it may have taken off from Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin, while flight tracking data indicated a possible departure from an airport in Necedah.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation to determine what led to the crash and to confirm the aircraft’s flight path.
