A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a 25-year-old driver in Chicago’s South Side nearly two years ago. According to the Chicago Police Department, the crash occurred in June 2024 around 11:58 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Kedzie Avenue.
Investigators said a black SUV was traveling southbound on Kedzie Avenue when it collided with a white sedan moving westbound on 83rd Street. The force of the crash pushed the sedan into the nearby Starlight Restaurant, and the impact was so severe that the vehicle’s engine was ejected from the car. Authorities reported that the driver of the sedan, identified as 25-year-old Raul Palacios, died at the scene.
Surveillance footage captured moments before the collision, with witnesses reporting that multiple gunshots were heard shortly before the crash occurred. After the impact, police said three male suspects exited the black SUV and fled the scene on foot.
Nearly two years later, authorities announced the arrest of 24-year-old Dujan Lucas of Rockford. Police said Lucas was taken into custody Thursday in the 2600 block of South California Avenue. He now faces two felony charges, including reckless homicide with a motor vehicle and failure to report an accident involving a death.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing as officials continue to review evidence connected to the incident.
