GURNEE, Ill. (November 10, 2025) — Winter weather turned deadly in the north suburbs Sunday night after icy roads caused a vehicle to lose control and collide head-on with another car, according to Gurnee police.

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. on Grand Avenue over Interstate 94. Investigators said a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound when the driver attempted to change lanes and struck a patch of ice. The vehicle then crossed the center median and entered eastbound traffic, colliding head-on with a 2007 Ford Focus.

The force of the impact pushed the Focus off the roadway into a ditch. A third vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, was hit by debris and suffered a flat tire, but no one inside was hurt.

Police said the driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman and two young children inside the same vehicle were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. Their current conditions have not been released.

Authorities believe icy pavement and freezing temperatures were key factors in the crash. The collision occurred during a period of heavy lake-effect snow across northern Illinois, which created slippery roads and reduced visibility for drivers.

Officials urge everyone on the road to use extra caution as winter weather continues. Even a thin layer of ice can cause a vehicle to lose traction in an instant. Drivers should reduce speed, avoid sudden lane changes, and increase following distance, especially on bridges and overpasses where ice forms first.
