AI ‘deadbots’ are persuasive — and researchers say they’re primed for monetization

AIAI avatars of deceased people, often called “deadbots,” are beginning to appear in powerful new contexts. Families have used them for advocacy and justice, such as when the parents of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver created an avatar of him to call for stronger gun laws, or when the family of road rage victim Chris Pelkey presented an AI-generated statement from him during his killer’s sentencing. These examples show how deadbots can carry strong emotional weight and persuasive power.

The industry behind these digital recreations is growing quickly, with experts predicting it could reach nearly $80 billion within a decade. Supporters say deadbots can preserve a sense of connection with loved ones, while critics warn about how commercial use could exploit grief and vulnerability. Researchers caution that once companies see profit potential, deadbots may be used in advertising, raising ethical concerns about manipulation and exploitation.

Legal experts also note that current U.S. laws offer limited protection. While some states recognize posthumous rights to a person’s likeness and voice, there are no federal rules specifically addressing deadbots. This leaves open questions of privacy, liability, and morality. Although many companies developing these tools insist they are against using deadbots for advertising, some admit they are exploring ways to monetize them. As the technology becomes more immersive and widespread, society will have to confront the difficult balance between remembrance, persuasion, and profit.
