Chicago, IL (November 11, 2024) – A man was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car on Saturday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday, November 10.

The crash happened at about at the intersection of West Rockland Road and the Des Plaines River walking trail. A 33-year-old man from Mundelein was riding his bike northbound on the Des Plaines River Trail when he attempted to cross West Rockland Road. He was then struck by a westbound Toyota Prius driven by a 39-year-old man from Gurnee.

The sheriff said the bicyclist was thrown onto the vehicle’s front windshield before he fell to the ground. The bicyclist was transported to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota, as well as a child passenger, were uninjured. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team continues to investigate the incident. Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Although Chicago is one of our country’s few truly walkable metropolises, pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders continue encountering danger on its thoroughfares. Based on preliminary data, local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century.

Unfortunately, nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. And notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs. In comparison, 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, near an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims must obtain immediate legal counsel from a qualified Chicago pedestrian accident attorney if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
