Chicago, IL (October 17, 2024) – Two children were injured on Wednesday afternoon, October 16, when they were hit by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter on Chicago’s South Side, Chicago police said.

A 7-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy were riding west in the area of the 6900 block of South Stony Island Avenue in Grand Crossing at about 3:40 p.m. when a white van heading south hit them in an intersection, police added.

The 12-year-old was treated by Chicago fire crews and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in fair condition, police confirmed. Meanwhile, CFD took the 7-year-old to Comer Children’s in serious condition. The driver remained on the scene and was not hurt, officers reported. However, no citations had been issued early Thursday morning, and Major Accident detectives are still investigating.

Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Pedestrians continue to encounter danger on Chicago’s thoroughfares and beyond despite the general safety provisions carved out for pedestrians in our region. Based on preliminary data, local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century.

Unfortunately, nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. And notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs. In comparison, 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, near an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims can greatly benefit from obtaining immediate legal counsel from a Chicago car accident attorney if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
