The Illinois Judges Foundation (IJF) has opened applications for the Harold Sullivan Scholarship Program.
The scholarship program recognizes Illinois law students who demonstrate a commitment to service, integrity, and the pursuit of justice. The scholarship funds may be applied toward law school tuition and fees.
In addition, the IJF has launched a new award under the Harold Sullivan Scholarship Program: The Justice Mary Jane Theis Scholarship, which honors Justice Theis (Ret.), her legacy of leadership, and dedication to the judiciary.
Applications will be accepted through 4 p.m. on June 26, 2026. Applications and questions should be submitted to Hon. Helaine Berger (Ret.) and Hon. April G. Troemper at ijf@chicagobar.org.
How to apply for the Harold Sullivan Scholarship Program
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Enrolled in an Illinois law school with at least one year remaining
- Demonstrated financial need
- Community service and/or pro bono experience
- No close family member who is a judge
The application consists of three parts. Parts 1 and 2 require applicants to provide general and academic information. Part 3 requires a written statement of financial need, community service and pro bono experience, and a legal writing essay.
About the Harold Sullivan Scholarship Program
Founded in 2009, the Harold Sullivan Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students attending Illinois law schools.
The IJF awards multiple scholarships each year, with no set limit on the number of awards that may be granted. In 2025, eight scholarships were awarded.
Scholarship funds are paid directly to recipients’ law schools and may be used for tuition and other qualified educational expenses.
