Accident News | Springfield, Illinois

Two people lost their lives following a wrong-way collision along Interstate 55 early Monday morning, prompting an emergency response and a temporary shutdown of the roadway near Lake Springfield.

According to the Illinois State Police, the crash occurred around 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near milepost 87.5, close to the East Lake Shore Drive and Chatham exit. Authorities reported that a driver traveling in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes struck another vehicle, leading to a severe head-on collision.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in one of the vehicles sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The identities of the victims were not immediately released. However, the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office later identified one of the deceased as a 42-year-old woman from Wentzville, while the other was a 51-year-old woman from Girard.

The interstate remained closed for several hours as emergency crews investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage. Traffic was eventually allowed to resume once the roadway was deemed safe. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way crash.
