A pedestrian was fatally struck in an early morning crash on Interstate 55 in suburban Romeoville on Sunday, prompting a temporary shutdown of southbound traffic, according to Illinois State Police. Authorities said troopers responded around 12:40 a.m. to the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Weber Road after receiving reports of a collision involving a pedestrian.
The individual was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members.
Shortly after the initial crash, a secondary collision involving three vehicles occurred in the same area. Police confirmed that no injuries were reported in the second incident.
All southbound lanes of I-55 were temporarily closed as emergency crews investigated and cleared the scene. The roadway reopened just after 5 a.m., though delays lingered for early morning drivers.
Investigators are working to determine what led to both crashes. Further details have not yet been released.
