A Chicago woman is facing felony charges after police say she struck a teenage scooter rider and fled the scene Wednesday morning on the city’s Southwest Side, leaving the victim critically injured. According to the Chicago Police Department, the crash occurred around 7:41 a.m. in the 3800 block of West 68th Street near Marquette Park. Authorities said a 16-year-old boy was riding a scooter when he entered the street from an alley and was hit by a black SUV in the roadway.
Police later identified the driver as 37-year-old Maria Gonzalez, who has been charged with failure to report an accident causing injury. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the collision, showing the teen entering the street shortly before impact. The injured teenager was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he remained in critical condition.
Residents in the neighborhood expressed concern following the incident, saying speeding vehicles have long posed a danger along the street. Neighbors noted that drivers frequently travel quickly through the area, particularly vehicles coming from nearby Pulaski Road, and renewed calls for traffic calming measures such as speed bumps to improve safety.
Authorities confirmed Gonzalez was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 5 as the investigation continues.
