A deadly head-on crash involving a school bus prompted an extensive emergency response Thursday morning in Manhattan, Illinois, authorities confirmed. According to Illinois State Police, the collision occurred around 8:32 a.m. on Manhattan-Monee Road, between School House Road and Scheer Road, near Kankakee Road.
Police said a school bus carrying 10 Manhattan School District students and the driver was traveling eastbound when it collided head-on with a passenger vehicle. The driver of the passenger car was pronounced dead at the scene. All students and the bus driver were transported to area hospitals as a precaution, with many taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.
Manhattan police and school officials confirmed that no students or the bus driver suffered serious injuries. Medical staff conducted thorough examinations to rule out fractures, head injuries, or concussions. By 1 p.m., all students had been released to their parents or guardians, and families were promptly notified following the crash.
Manhattan School District Superintendent Damien Aherne expressed gratitude for first responders and school staff, stating that the district’s priority was the safety and well-being of students and that ongoing support would be provided to affected families. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
