Understanding the Inc. 5000 Selection Process

2025 marks the 45th edition of Inc. Magazine’s annual ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S.

But how does Inc. determine its ranking?

A spot on the Inc. 5000 isn’t a pay-to-play vanity award, where companies can secure top placement if they’re willing to spend a bit of cash.

Instead, companies must apply for consideration and undergo a rigorous vetting process.

To be eligible, a company must be privately held, independent, and for-profit; have generated a minimum of $100,000 in revenue in 2021; and have generated a minimum of $2 million in revenue in 2024.

Financial statements must be provided to Inc. to confirm gross annual revenue, which is used to calculate a business’s growth rate.

Finally, those who make the draft list undergo intensive vetting, involving interviews and background research. All companies must pass this editorial review to make the final cut.
