Chicago, IL (January 27, 2025) – Police are asking for help in the search for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash on the city’s West Side on Friday morning, January 24.

The crash unfolded just before 8:50 a.m. in the 700 block of North Oakley Boulevard in West Town, authorities said. The victim, a 66-year-old woman, who was later identified as Halyna Hudzan, was crossing the street when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle that turned into the crosswalk. The driver then fled the scene.

Hudzan was taken to the hospital following the crash, where she was later pronounced dead. Officers believe the car was a red 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with Illinois plate DH30095. It was last seen heading eastbound along Chicago Avenue and possibly northbound onto Damen Avenue. No further details have been released about the suspect as of Monday, however, and officers continue to investigate at this time.

We offer our sincere condolences to Halyna Hudzan’s loved ones.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Even though Chicago is one of the few truly walkable metropolises in our country, pedestrians continue to encounter danger on its thoroughfares. Local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century, based on preliminary data.

A total of nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. Notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs, while 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, close to an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, it is critical that victims obtain immediate legal counsel from a Chicago pedestrian accident attorney if they or a member of their family has been injured in a collision.
