Schaumburg, IL (November 27, 2024) – Illinois State Police troopers said a 12-year-old Palatine girl was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Algonquin Road and Thoreau Drive in Schaumburg early Monday evening.
She received medical attention at the scene, including aid from three passersby. She was then transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where she was pronounced dead at about 5:40 p.m., authorities said.
The girl was with other young friends when she was struck by a dark blue minivan at approximately 5:10 p.m. The driver of the vehicle, a 65-year-old Cicero man, stopped immediately. None of the other children were injured. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, though police released no further details about the motorist, including whether any citations had been issued or whether speed or intoxication were considered to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing, but no other information has been released.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s family.
Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago
Although Chicago is one of the few completely walkable metropolitan areas in the United States, traffic analysts say that the number of pedestrians who have been killed in traffic incidents over the past year has reached its greatest level in the preceding half-century. And according to preliminary data that local authorities have collected, the rate of these incidents is only increasing.
Unfortunately, nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. And notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs. In comparison, 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, near an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims must obtain immediate legal counsel from a Chicago pedestrian accident attorney if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
