Williamson County, IL (September 17, 2024) – According to troopers with the Illinois State Police (ISP) and local officers, a woman died after being hit by a vehicle late Saturday night in southern Illinois. Per Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich, the crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. on September 14 in the 12000 block of Lake of Egypt Road.

Deputies discovered that a pedestrian, later identified as Jana M. Lence of Herrin, was struck by a passing car while she was crossing the street. Sheriff Diederich said EMS transported her, but she later died from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile who was traveling home from work. The sheriff confirmed that the driver was not impaired. The roadway was closed for a period of time overnight as crews cleared the scene; however, the Illinois State Police added that the Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting the sheriff’s office with this ongoing investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jana M. Lence’s family at this time.
