Clay County, IL (September 30, 2024)A 59-year-old Monticello, Arkansas, woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 50 at the Xenia-Iola Road intersection.

Clay County Coroner Bryce Henry pronounced Mia Daniels deceased on the scene. Illinois State Police say a vehicle driven by 44-year-old William Shufeldt of Iuka was attempting to pass other vehicles, including a semi, while eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 and struck Daniels’ vehicle head-on. Shufeldt was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries and was ultimately ticketed for improper overtaking on the left. The truck driver was unhurt.

Agencies assisting with the crash were Clay County EMS, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Xenia Fire Protection District, Flora/Clay County Rescue, Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police as well as the Clay County Coroner’s Office. The crash investigation is in its initial stages, however, and no further information is available at this time. Witnesses were asked to come forward in the meantime.
