Chicago, IL (September 15, 2024) – A 21-year-old woman is dead, and two other people were critically injured after they were ejected from a vehicle in the South Loop on Saturday morning, September 14.
Chicago police said the crash happened in the 100 block of West Roosevelt Road. A tow truck driver collided with an SUV, which caused it to strike another vehicle, which then lost control and struck a wall, police said. All three people in the vehicle were ejected.
The 21-year-old woman suffered a head injury and was transported in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and cooperated with the police. The tow truck driver fled the scene, police said. The Chicago Police Major Accidents Unit is investigating the incident. Witnesses were asked to come forward in the meantime.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
Fatal Car Accidents in Illinois
Although Chicago is one of our country’s few truly walkable metropolises, pedestrians continue to encounter danger on its thoroughfares. Based on preliminary data, local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century.
Unfortunately, nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. And notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs. In comparison, 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, near an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims can greatly benefit from obtaining immediate legal counsel from a qualified Chicago car accident lawyer if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
