Chicago, IL (August 4, 2024) – A 44-year-old woman was hospitalized after being seriously injured in a West Side hit-and-run crash on Saturday, August 3. Police said the crash happened in the Greektown neighborhood’s 0-100-block of South Halsted Street at about 5:45 p.m. The victim was apparently crossing Madison Street when a car hit her and kept going.

Officers with the Chicago Police Department confirmed the driver of a Toyota Rav 4 struck the woman. The driver did not stop and fled the scene southbound on Halsted. However, the investigation into the accident continues, and no further details about those involved were released in the interim.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her family at this challenging time.

Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Although Chicago is one of the few truly walkable metropolises in our country, pedestrians continue to encounter danger on its thoroughfares. Based on preliminary data, local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century.

Unfortunately, nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. And notably, 40% of fatal pedestrian collisions were caused by hit-and-runs. In comparison, 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents transpired in Chicago alone, near an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims must obtain immediate legal counsel from a Chicago pedestrian accident attorney if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
