Lake Zurich, IL (June 6, 2024) – The body of a 77-year-old man was discovered in suburban Chicago following the explosion of his home nearby, according to local authorities.

The Lake County sheriff’s office reported that the explosion occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and completely destroyed the residence in Lake Zurich. The man’s body was extricated from the debris, though his identity has not been disclosed. He was discovered in the debris after firefighters spent several hours fighting the blaze that had ignited in the aftermath of the detonation.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the 23500 block of North Overhill Road in response to reports of an explosion. The firefighters’ initial attack on the flames was impeded by burning natural gas at the front corner of the house, Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard added. The incident caused the windows of adjacent residences to break and shatter, though the explosion did not result in any additional injuries, officials confirmed. No further details were released as the inquiry into the incident proceeds.

We offer our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family.
