Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Chicago, like many other major American cities, is pedestrian-friendly, providing citizens with easy access to a wide variety of food and retail options as well as other local attractions. Walking is a great way to see the vibrant architecture and culture of Chicago. Unfortunately, drivers and other traffic dangers pose a threat to pedestrians crossing Chicago’s congested streets.

When crossing roads or approaching crossroads, among other areas, pedestrians should constantly be alert of their surroundings and proceed with extra care. There are busier roads, neighborhoods, and crossroads in Chicago than others, which puts pedestrians at more danger.

That said, crosswalks are where most pedestrian crashes in Chicago happen. Accidents may be caused by distracted drivers or pedestrians (such as eating, texting, changing music, or interacting with passengers), inattentiveness, and disregarding traffic signals. Furthermore, for a pedestrian crossing a road, neglecting to surrender the right-of-way might have disastrous or fatal consequences.

However, Illinois is a “fault” or “at-fault” insurance state, which means the party causing the accident may be obligated to pay damages to the people who were hurt or to the families of those killed.
