Chicago, IL (April 10, 2024) – A man who was changing a tire on the Stevenson Expressway over the weekend was killed in a collision, and police have since identified the victim and arrested a 40-year-old woman from Chicago who was accused of driving under the influence in connection with the crash.
Nikolas Hutto, a 28-year-old from Tinley Park, was replacing a tire on Stevenson Expressway after hitting a pothole while driving home. At that time, the suspect driver’s Dodge truck ran off the road and into the right shoulder, striking a Hyundai and two pedestrians, including Hutto. The suspect has been charged with both aggravated DUI involving death and aggravated DUI involving substantial bodily injury, Illinois State Police said on Wednesday. Following the collision, the other pedestrian was seriously hurt, though their current condition is not known.
We offer our sincere condolences to Nikolas Hutto’s loved ones. Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of their full recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago
Although Chicago is one of our country’s few truly walkable metropolises, pedestrians continue to encounter danger on its thoroughfares. Based on preliminary data, local authorities estimate that the number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic collisions over the past year may have peaked at its highest level in half a century.
A total of nearly 200 pedestrians died in recent vehicle collisions, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year. Moreover, at least 80% of severe and fatal pedestrian incidents took place in Chicago alone, in close proximity to an intersection of 125 feet or less. Of course, victims must obtain immediate legal counsel from a Chicago pedestrian accident attorney if they or a family member has been injured in a collision.
