Oak Park, IL. February 15, 2024 – On Thursday night, tragedy struck on the Eisenhower Expressway in Oak Park as a driver lost their life in a collision with the rear of a semi-tractor trailer.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:39 p.m. on the westbound Eisenhower near Oak Park Avenue. Emergency responders found a severely damaged 2008 Ford Edge wedged under the trailer of the semi-truck on the shoulder of the road. Oak Park police and fire crews were swiftly on the scene.
The Oak Park Fire Department reported efforts to extricate one occupant from the Ford involved in the collision. The semi-truck was parked on the right side of the road when the crash occurred. According to Illinois State Police, the driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the semi emerged unharmed.
Following the crash, all lanes on the westbound Eisenhower at Oak Park Avenue were closed, but later reopened around 1:30 a.m.
A 2020 Center for Disease Control study found that approximately 415,000 road accidents involved large vehicles and trucks, resulting in approximately 100,000 injuries and 3,864 fatalities. Approximately 30% of all fatal crashes occur on high intensity highways like the Eisenhower Expressway, while just over 60% occur in rural areas.
