New York OKs human composting, becomes 6th state in US to do so

FuneralNew York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation at the end of December legalizing natural organic reduction, more popularly known as human composting. This makes New York the sixth state to allow this method of burial behind Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and California.

It takes about a month for a mixture of wood chips, alfalfa, and straw to allow the body to break down and become a cubic yard of nutrient-dense soil— equivalent to about 36 bags of soil. Individuals who consider themselves environmentally aware feel drawn to this type of service to avoid the carbon footprint of more traditional burial methods.

Opponents of human composting include groups like the New York State Catholic Conference, which has called the legislation inappropriate and not properly reverent for human remains.
