illinois food illness lawyerYou may often pair thoughts of your favorite comfort foods with dinner rolls. But 37 types of bread that found their way onto dinner tables, grocery stores, and restaurants have been recalled because they contain dangerous bacteria. Babies, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system are most at risk. If you or a family member experienced food poisoning due to someone else’s negligence, it is a very serious matter.

Bread Products Recalled

The recall involves dinner rolls, sandwich rolls, and buns that were made between March 21, 2022, and April 25, 2022, with an ingredient supplied by Lyons Magnus, a company that also makes nutritional drinks and coffee. Piantedosi Baking Company announced the recall in August. Here are some of the products included in that recall:

  • Hawaiian Sandwich Roll

  • Brioche Style Burger Roll

  • Gourmet Junior Burger Roll

  • Gourmet Potato Deli Roll

  • Sweet Potato Dinner Roll

  • Finger Roll

  • Garlic & Herb Dinner Roll

The recall involves dozens of bread that could still be in your pantry or freezer. Some of them do not expire until 2023. You should not eat the bread if you still have it at home or in your business.

Bacteria and Symptoms

Food poisoning or foodborne illness is caused by eating contaminated food. The raw ingredient used to make the bread has the potential to cause microbial contamination from the following two bacteria:

Cronobacter sakazakii – You may have heard of this germ recently contaminating powdered infant formula. Cronobacter infections can be serious for infants, people 65 and over, or people with a compromised immune system, such as cancer, organ transplant, and HIV patients.

Cronobacter infections may lead to fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infections which can spark even more serious complications.

Clostridium botulinum or botulism – This bacteria produces dangerous toxins that can attack your nerves and lead to severe illness.

It usually starts with the muscles in your face weakening. The weakness may spread to the neck and legs. Weakened muscles can lead to an inability to breathe. Other symptoms include blurred vision, slurred speech, and difficulty swallowing. All of the symptoms stem from muscle paralysis caused by the toxin; therefore you must seek medical attention. Symptoms usually start 18 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food.

Can I File a Lawsuit?

The CDC estimates that 48 million people get sick from foodborne illnesses each year and 3,000 die. Many of these illnesses can be prevented. Unfortunately, they happen because there is negligence by food service entities. The most common causes of food poisoning are bacteria which can contaminate food during the production process causing a variety of illnesses. Negligence of a restaurant, food processor, or grocery store could mean you have a valid claim.

Last month, Magnus Lynos expanded a recall of more than 80 beverages due to possible microbial contamination. The company makes cold-brew coffees, protein drinks such as Premier Protein, milk including Oatly, and other nutritional drinks.

If you feel sick after eating contaminated food or have suffered food poisoning, you may have the right to recover medical expenses, lost wages, and compensation for your pain and suffering.
