CBS 2 Chicago reported last week that a unique type of taxi could be coming to the Chicagoland area very soon. eVTOL, which is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is a variety of VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft that uses electric power to hover, take and land, vertically is going to be tested in Chicago in the next week. eVTOL’s have not been approved by Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”), so the compan implementing the project will be using helicopters during the test run.

A company called Eve is overseeing the test run, which will provide air taxis (helicoptors) from landing areas in Schaumburg and Tinley Park to downtown Chicago. Users will be able to utilize an app to reserve a ride for $150.00 to take the air taxi downtown and avoid the normal road commute. The air ride is expected to take 20 minutes instead of the usual hour plus for those who live in the the north and south suburbs.

The goal, once eVTOLs are approved by the FAA, is to eventually have these rides available for $50 to $75 per ride.

Other companies are getting behind this technology as well. Chicago-based United Airlines is banking on the technology to cut down on commute times to and from the airport spending 15 million dollars this week for up to 400.

I had never heard of this technology prior to reading this article. Although the trips are incredibly pricy, I think this could be must needed alternative to help reduce rush hour traffic in Chicago. Anoter bonus is the air vehicles are electric, which will also hopefully help reduce emmissions. I’m looking for to see how this works and hopefully eVTOLs are certified for use in the near future.
