On October 11 through the 14, the Christian Legal Society held its annual national conference in Clearwater Beach, Florida. The Christian Legal Society is a group of Christian attorneys dedicated to serving Jesus Christ through the practice of law, the defense of religious liberty and life, and the provision of legal aid to the needy.

The attorneys of Mauck & Baker are proud to be members of the Christian Legal Society and make it a priority to attend the annual conferences. This year was no exception.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Being Faithful: Advocating for Justice, Mercy, and Truth.” The featured plenary speakers for the conference included Shirley Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; Mark Lanier, recognized as one of the top trial attorneys in the nation; and Dr. Steve Brown, senior pastor of Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church in South Florida. Also featured was Edwin Meese III, former attorney general of the United States.

The weekend conference served as a needed reminder of the important role lawyers play in God’s master plan. Each of us has been called by God to accomplish Kingdom work; lawyers are not excluded. Through the plenary sessions, the workshops, and interactions with other attorneys, attendees explored ways to be faithful to God’s calling in our lives, and in particular our calling as Christian lawyers. If there was ever a time for faithfulness in the life of a Christian attorney, it is now. With threats against religious liberty continuing to grow and the need for legal aid likewise, Christian attorneys have a unique opportunity and duty to address these important issues today to the glory of God.

As with past conferences, this year’s meeting also served as a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to make new connections. The ability to fellowship with like-minded attorneys is a blessing, which at times can be forgotten. Fellowship serves as a tool to encourage one another, to learn from one another, to pray for one another, and to accomplish a common goal together. This year’s conference lived up to those expectations and then some.

Next year’s conference will return in October 2019 and will be held in Chicago, which has a vibrant CLS community and also happens to be the birthplace of CLS itself. We look forward to more encouraging fellowship and sessions where, as lawyers, we can learn more about how to serve the Kingdom with our gifts.
