The year was 2014. Starry-eyed with a new college degree in hand, I was eager to enter the legal arena.
I was so young and innocent.
You may call this shameless pandering, but Mauck & Baker was number one on my list of where I wanted to work after college. They were local, Christian, and civil liberties focused—what more could one want? I sent my first resume to the firm after graduation and waited in anxious expectation for the call back.
Nothing came.
I knew beforehand that lawyers could be a little slow, but eight months of waiting by the phone for their call was a trial in its own right. It did finally come.
It has been a joyful and fulfilling year and a half serving as the Communications Manager at Mauck & Baker, but I have sadly taken leave of the position. The attorneys have inspired—or at least did not scare me away from—pursuing a Juris Doctor degree, and I am currently in the first weeks of school at Chicago-Kent College of Law.
It has been an enormous privilege to receive spiritual discipleship on work time, to interact with so many brilliant people, to see how Christian attorneys interact with clients and one another, and to work on cases that stand for Biblical truth, even when it means going against popular opinion. The experience has shaped my vision of what it means to implement my faith into my daily work and career.
In our many meetings over new ventures for the firm or reviewing past work, John Mauck would inevitably pause the discussion and say, “Our first purpose is to advance the Kingdom of God.” Though I am no longer officially apart of Mauck & Baker, I still feel I am continuing the firm’s work. We all still have the same first purpose. After all, we share the same employer.
