Loyola wins AAJ Regional Mock Trials

Antonio M. Romanucci, a partner in the Chicago injury firm of Romanucci & Blandin, LLC, congratulates students from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, the winning team in the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Regional Mock Trial Championship held Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 27 and 28) at the Daley Center in Chicago.

The Loyola students included Jaclyn Polsinelli, Eva Sosnowska, Kathleen Sullivan and Amber Battin. Cook County Judge Jamie Shapiro served as a judge of the case.  The winning team will compete in the finals in New Orleans March 18-21. Romanucci & Blandin served as regional coordinator of the event for 10 years.

ISBA President John O’Brien will present Presidential Commendation Awards to 2nd District Appellate Justice Susan F. Hutchinson and Cook County Circuit Judge Jane L. Stuart.

Judge Hutchinson received her B.A. in political science from Quincy University in 1971 and her J.D. from DePaul University School of Law in 1977. She served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in McHenry County (1977-81) and a Judge in the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit (1981-94). In November 1994, she was elected as a Judge in the Appellate Court, Second District.

Judge Stuart received her B.S. degree in education from Chicago State University in 1970 and her J.D. from John Marshall Law School in 1985. She was the first African-American to be elected as a Student Bar Association Officer. She was an Attorney Examiner at Chicago Title Insurance Co. from 1985-1987 before moving on to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office from 1987-1996. She was elected as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge in 1996.

Women Everywhere: Partners in service project

Do you want to help others, but have trouble finding the time? WE have the opportunity for you!

The ISBA’s Standing Committee on Women and the Law and the Standing Committee on Racial and Ethnic Minorities and the law will help support the WOMEN EVERYWHERE project. The project is seeking volunteers to spend part or all of June 11, 2010, to attend pre-assigned community service agencies dedicated to helping women and children. WOMEN EVERYWHERE direct service activities include gardening, painting, building, and cleaning. Legal education projects include presenting topical seminars and workshops, or providing job training information. Both male and female friends of the legal community are invited to join the volunteer effort.

WOMEN EVERYWHERE is an annual volunteer project that provides direct services to women and children in need through community service at agencies.

Nordic lawyers to hold smorgasbord

The Nordic Law Club will hold its annual Spring Smorgasbord and program on Monday, March 22, in the Tower Club on the 39th floor of Chicago’s Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive.

The guest speaker, Prof. Anne-Marie Andreasson-Hogg of the Center for Scandinavian Studies at North Park University, will reveal mysteries of Viking mythology.

The event will begin with a 5:30 p.m. cash-bar reception, followed at 6:30 p.m. by a festive array of Swedish meatballs, salmon and herring hors d’oeuvres, codfish, and rice pudding with lingonberries.

Lawyers United to Help Haiti Rebuild: A Call to Action

Victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti will be the focus of fundraising and volunteer recruiting efforts at a reception and dinner in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel on Wednesday, March 31 from 5 – 8 p.m.

Hosted by the Haitian American Lawyers Association of Illinois (HALA), Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity – Chicago Alumni Chapter (PAD), and the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, the event, Lawyers United to Help Haiti Rebuild, will feature remarks from Honorary Co-Chairs Jerold S. Solovy, Jenner & Block; Judge George N. Leighton (retired), Neal & Leroy; and ISBA Past President Timothy L. Bertschy, Heyl Royster, Peoria.

Still time to register for Young Lawyers Bean Bag Party and Tournament

The Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers will hold a Bean Bag Party and Tournament on March 6 to benefit the Illinois Bar Foundation/YLD Children’s Assistance Program.

The YLD Children’s Assistance Fund is a special fund of the Illinois Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity.

  • When: Saturday, March 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Where: Mahoney’s Pub and Grille, 551 N. Ogden Ave. (on Ogden near Grand), Chicago (map and directions)
  • What: Appetizer bar and domestic draft beer, mixed well drinks and soft drinks
  • Cost: $35.00 per person per wristband or $100.00 for entrance fee for Bean Bag Tournament for a team of two with two wristbands. You must be at least 21 years old to participate.
  • Deadline: Bean Bag Team registration and pre-registration for a wristband is open until Tuesday, March 2. Thereafter wristbands can be purchased at the door the day of the event
